Notes from New Street- Our Response to Hurricane Harvey destruction

Aug 30, 2017 by

Hello Immanuel!

Many of you have asked me how we can respond to the heartbreaking devastation that has been wrought upon our brothers and sisters in Houston, Texas and so many other communities that were in the path of Hurricane Harvey.  I am, as always, touched and inspired by your generosity and compassionate spirit.  I have attached a letter from Bishop Park regarding the disaster and the United Methodist response.

In times like these, when so often our focus is on the weaknesses and discord in our beloved denomination, it is refreshing to see living and visible reminders of the strength in our connectional church.  United Methodists are already on the ground giving aid and participating in the vast relief effort that is currently underway.  UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) is an incredible organization that pulls together and deploys the incredible gifts, resources, and manpower from all around our Church.  UMCOR is often among the first to arrive in disaster areas, and the last to leave—staying on scene as the hands and feet of Christ as lives and communities are rebuilt.

As Bishop Park states in his letter, if you would like to support UMCOR’s relief effort you can participate in this coming Sunday’s special offering by noting your donation for “9205-Texas 2017 Flooding.”  You can also donate directly to UMCOR at www.umcor.org.  100% of all donations received by UMCOR go directly to relief and recovery efforts in the affected areas.

However you feel moved to support the people of Texas, I join Bishop Park in calling for all of us to a time of prayer for those whose lives have been touched by this disaster.  They are our brothers and sisters—our fellow human beings—and we stand united with them during this time.   While we weep with them at the tragedy, we pray in the powerful name of Jesus Christ for peace, protection, and comfort.  May the Spirit of God move in mighty and miraculous ways during this time.  Amen.

In His Service,

Pastor Dave
